Puffing Billy Railway have partnered with Children’s University Swinburne (CUS) as a learning destination. CUS encourages children between the ages of 7-14 to become involved in exciting learning activities beyond the school classroom. Learning destinations play an incredibly important role in providing rich learning experiences for CUS members, which helps to further children’s curiosity and interests, and foster their aspirations and love of learning. Children’s University Swinburne has over 35 participating schools, and more than 13 learning destinations, with many more lined up!
About children’s University
- Participating children have a Passport to Learning in which their hours of extra-curricular learning are recorded.
- The program is voluntary for children to join, and child-led in that children choose which learning activities they’d like to participate in.
- Learning Destinations are places children can ‘travel’ with their Passports to Learning.
- The hours of learning are rewarded with Children’s University certificates which are awarded at graduation ceremonies on the university campuses with children wearing ceremonial caps and gowns, just like the older university graduates.
How it works at Puffing Billy Railway
Children’s University members will bring in their Passports to be stamped once they have completed an activity with Puffing Billy Railway.
Children can fill out the details of the activity in their Passport, including:
- Date
- Time they spent doing the activity. Should be reasonable, usually 30 minutes to 2 hours.
- Name of the activity

Children’s University members can get their passports stamped across Puffing Billy Railway at multiple sites, including:
